Team Volnix from Presidency University, Bengaluru, comprising Samrudh Yash and Pavan Kumar J, win Red Bull Basement India 2021, a platform that empowers student innovators to drive positive change through tech solutions. The duo have created a program that aims to save water by automating the process of watering plants and lawns based on the moisture content of the soil, thereby avoiding overwatering by existing sprinkler systems. They will now spend the next month further developing their prototype before they travel to the Red Bull Basement World Final in Istanbul, Turkey, from December 12 to 16.

Says Team Volnix, “We have a passion to bring change to the modern world and concern for ecological resources. Our product reduces human resource required to maintain plants and lawns. Irregular and excessive watering is a major issue faced in farmlands and urban gardens, so we wanted to design a product to address this issue”.

With their prototype nearing completion, the team is now focusing on front end web development and working on ways to scale the product for use on farmlands and large plantations. They aim to make it user-friendly, with a host of features and the ability to access it remotely through a smart phone, and ultimately hope to convert it into an AI/ML model.

On participating in and winning Red Bull Basement and now preparing for the World Final, the team says, “Red Bull Basement is a great platform for entrepreneurs; if we were to start entirely on our own, it would be much more difficult to get exposure, investors, and funding. It also gave us a platform to interact with industry experts who mentored us, through which we gained insight on product prototyping. We’re nervous about the World Final, but it’s a great opportunity to learn and network with other innovators”.
