A team of faculty members from Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences (KITS), Coimbatore has come up with an electro-adhesive clutch which is considered to be a breakthrough in the electronic industry. This clutch aids in the control of finger movements to realize the virtual objects.
In an official statement, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences said, “It has wide applications in medical Haptic devices and exosuits where the mechanical components can be replaced by electronic fabric clutches which effectively reduces the weight of existing such devices.”
The team has come up with an Indian Patent which is a lightweight fabric electro-adhesive clutch for Artificial Intelligence and IoT enabled virtual reality haptic gloves, the university said.
“It is a breakthrough in the electronic industry where the environmentally compatible fabric clutches are flexible, wearable, hydrophobic and works at low power,” it said.
Speaking of its use in medical science, the university said that the developed clutches are cost-effective, easy to assemble for applications in healthcare assistive devices to augment the differently-abled persons to do their routine works at ease.
