Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform, shared the learning trends from 2020. While technology skills continued to be top skills among Indian learners, soft skills have gained significant popularity.
In 2020, a record number of people turned to online learning as a source of hope, growth, and resilience amid economic uncertainty, and campus and workplace disruptions. The most popular courses on Coursera highlight that learners in India are striving to develop the critical tech, business and data skills and simultaneously gain control of their mental health. The trend is a reflection of learners pursuing courses necessary to be successful in a world where remote or hybrid working has become the norm.
A joint report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) estimates that more than 4 million Indians below the age of 30 have lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Dampened economic recovery and employment prospects impacted Indians’ mental and physical health, while also raising pertinent questions about the relevance of existing skillsets and the aptitude to acquire new skills. This is evident by the large number of Indians who enrolled in courses in courses such as Learning How to Learn and The Science of Well-Being.
Python, AI, Machine Learning and Data Science continued to be among the top technology skills.
